Detect a wide range of conditions
From gallstones and kidney stones to liver tumours and pancreatic masses – whole abdomen ultrasound provides a comprehensive overview of abdominal health.
Whole abdomen ultrasound is a safe, non‑invasive imaging test that evaluates all the major organs in the abdomen – including the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, and abdominal aorta. It provides critical information for diagnosing a wide range of conditions, from gallstones and kidney stones to liver disease, pancreatic disorders, and abdominal masses.
This examination is often used as a first‑line screening tool for patients with abdominal pain, digestive symptoms, or unexplained weight loss. It is also valuable for monitoring known conditions, such as liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, or abdominal aortic aneurysm.
At Amytri, our whole abdomen ultrasounds are performed by experienced consultant radiologists using state‑of‑the‑art equipment. We take a systematic approach, scanning each organ in detail, and provide a comprehensive report with clear, actionable findings. Our goal is to give you and your doctor the information needed for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Abdominal symptoms can be vague – a whole abdomen ultrasound provides a clear, visual assessment of all major organs, helping identify the underlying cause.
From gallstones and kidney stones to liver tumours and pancreatic masses – whole abdomen ultrasound provides a comprehensive overview of abdominal health.
Many abdominal conditions – such as fatty liver, aortic aneurysm, or early kidney disease – may have no symptoms. Ultrasound can detect them early, enabling timely intervention.
For patients with chronic liver disease, kidney stones, or other conditions, serial ultrasound assessments track progression and guide treatment adjustments.
We examine each organ individually, using a standardised protocol to ensure no structure is overlooked.
We assess liver size, echogenicity (fatty infiltration), and the presence of focal lesions (cysts, hemangiomas, tumours). We evaluate the intrahepatic bile ducts and portal vessels.
We evaluate the gallbladder wall thickness, the presence of stones (cholelithiasis), sludge, or polyps. We also assess the common bile duct for dilatation.
We visualise the head, body, and tail of the pancreas – looking for masses, calcifications, or signs of pancreatitis. The pancreatic duct may also be assessed.
We measure splenic size and assess for focal lesions, infarction, or splenomegaly, which can indicate haematological or liver disease.
We evaluate renal size, cortical thickness, and the presence of stones, cysts, or hydronephrosis. The bladder wall and residual volume are also assessed.
We measure the aortic diameter to screen for aneurysm, and we assess for lymphadenopathy or free intra‑abdominal fluid (ascites).
We ask you to fast for 6‑8 hours before the scan (no food or drink) to ensure the gallbladder is distended and the view of the upper abdomen is clear. For the bladder assessment, we ask you to drink water and have a comfortably full bladder.
You lie on your back on the examination table. The radiologist applies gel to your abdomen and uses a transducer to scan each organ systematically. You may be asked to take deep breaths or turn to your side to improve visualisation.
The radiologist reviews the images and provides a comprehensive report, noting any abnormalities, measurements, and conclusions. The report is shared with your referring doctor.
We discuss the findings with you (where appropriate) and recommend further steps – which may include additional imaging, laboratory tests, or specialist referral.
It is a versatile test used for a wide range of symptoms and screening indications.
If you have pain in the upper abdomen, right side, or flank – ultrasound can identify gallstones, kidney stones, or other causes.
Persistent digestive symptoms may indicate gall bladder, liver, or pancreatic disease – ultrasound can provide answers.
If blood tests show elevated liver enzymes, ultrasound can assess for fatty liver, cirrhosis, or focal lesions.
Systemic symptoms may be due to abdominal pathology – ultrasound helps screen for masses or infection.
Patients with liver disease, kidney disease, or a history of stones benefit from regular ultrasound surveillance.
Many people choose whole abdomen ultrasound as part of a routine health check‑up to detect silent conditions early.
Dr. Abhishek has extensive experience in abdominal ultrasound, with a deep understanding of normal and abnormal appearances of all abdominal organs. He is skilled in detecting subtle findings that guide accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
If you are coming for a health check‑up or feel anxious about the results, having your partner with you can provide reassurance.
We welcome partners to attend the ultrasound. We explain what we are seeing, show you the images on screen, and discuss the findings. Your partner's presence can be helpful for understanding the results and planning next steps together.

Yes, we ask you to drink water and have a comfortably full bladder before the scan. This helps visualise the urinary bladder and the pelvic organs.
No, the scan is painless. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer as it moves over your abdomen, but it is not uncomfortable.
The whole abdomen ultrasound typically takes 20‑30 minutes, depending on the complexity and the need for detailed views.
