Multiple Pregnancy Care

Twin Pregnancy Evaluation

Specialised monitoring for twins, triplets, and higher‑order multiples – ensuring the best outcomes for you and your babies.

Overview

Twice the joy, twice the care.

A twin pregnancy is a special journey – but it also comes with higher risks and unique challenges. Twin pregnancy evaluation is a comprehensive, evidence‑based approach to monitoring your babies' growth, wellbeing, and development, while also keeping you healthy. It includes early determination of chorionicity (whether your twins share a placenta), serial growth scans, Doppler studies, and screening for twin‑specific complications such as Twin‑to‑Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) and selective growth restriction.

Carrying twins, triplets, or more requires more frequent and detailed ultrasound assessments than a singleton pregnancy. Your care plan is tailored to the type of multiples you are carrying – dichorionic (separate placentas) or monochorionic (shared placenta) – and the individual needs of each baby.

At Amytri, our twin pregnancy evaluation is led by a consultant radiologist with advanced training in fetal medicine and multiple pregnancy management. We use high‑resolution ultrasound, Doppler, and fetal monitoring to track each baby's growth, fluid levels, and blood flow. We work closely with your obstetrician and a multidisciplinary team to provide a seamless, supportive experience – helping you prepare for the arrival of your multiples with confidence.

What twin pregnancy evaluation covers

  • Early determination of chorionicity (number of placentas) – crucial for risk stratification
  • Serial growth scans – monitoring each baby's growth velocity and detecting discordance
  • Amniotic fluid assessment – checking for polyhydramnios or oligohydramnios in each sac
  • Doppler studies of umbilical arteries – to assess placental function for each twin
  • Screening for Twin‑to‑Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) – using fluid and bladder assessments
  • Evaluation of fetal wellbeing – biophysical profile, non‑stress test as needed
  • Delivery planning and coordination with neonatal teams
Why it matters

Specialised monitoring for a safer journey.

Twin pregnancies are unique – they need a dedicated approach to identify and manage complications before they become emergencies.

Prevention

Early detection of complications

Conditions like TTTS, selective growth restriction, and preterm labour can be identified early through regular ultrasound and Doppler – allowing for timely interventions that can save lives.

Planning

Optimise timing of delivery

With close monitoring, we can determine the safest time to deliver – balancing the risks of prematurity against the risks of continuing the pregnancy. This is especially critical in monochorionic twins.

Reassurance

Peace of mind for parents

Knowing that both babies are being carefully monitored gives parents confidence and reduces the anxiety that often accompanies a multiple pregnancy.

What we assess

A comprehensive evaluation of each baby.

Our twin pregnancy evaluation covers all the key parameters that matter for multiple pregnancies.

Chorionicity and Zygosity Assessment

We determine whether your twins share a placenta (monochorionic) or have separate placentas (dichorionic) – this is the most important factor influencing risk and monitoring frequency.

Serial Growth Scans

We measure each baby's head, abdomen, and femur individually to track growth velocity and detect discordance (when one twin is significantly larger than the other).

Amniotic Fluid Assessment

We measure the deepest vertical pocket in each amniotic sac. Abnormal fluid (polyhydramnios in one twin, oligohydramnios in the other) may indicate TTTS.

Doppler Studies

We assess umbilical artery Doppler for each twin – abnormal flow can indicate placental insufficiency. We also evaluate middle cerebral artery and ductus venosus when indicated.

Screening for Twin‑to‑Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS)

In monochorionic twins, we look for the classic signs: polyhydramnios in the recipient twin, oligohydramnios in the donor, and bladder abnormalities – allowing early referral for laser therapy.

Fetal Wellbeing and Biophysical Profile

We assess fetal movements, tone, breathing, and heart rate (using NST if needed) to confirm that both twins are coping well.

How it works

Your twin pregnancy evaluation journey, step by step.

01
Referral

Initial consultation

Your obstetrician refers you for a twin pregnancy evaluation. We review your medical history and confirm the type of multiples you are carrying.

02
Baseline

Comprehensive baseline scan

We perform a detailed ultrasound to determine chorionicity, measure each baby, and assess fluid and Dopplers. This establishes a baseline for all future scans.

03
Monitor

Ongoing surveillance

We schedule regular scans – typically every 2‑4 weeks, or more frequently for monochorionic twins – to track growth and detect any early signs of complications.

04
Plan

Delivery planning and coordination

As you approach term, we work with your obstetrician and neonatal team to plan the safest delivery timing and mode, ensuring both babies receive the best possible start.

Is it for you?

Twin pregnancy evaluation is essential for all multiple pregnancies – especially if any of these apply.

Every multiple pregnancy benefits from specialist monitoring, but it is absolutely critical in these situations.

Monochorionic twins (shared placenta)

These twins are at risk of TTTS, TAPS, and selective growth restriction – requiring intensive surveillance from the second trimester.

Growth discordance

If one twin is measuring significantly smaller than the other, we need to assess placental function and growth trajectory closely.

Maternal hypertension or diabetes

These conditions are more common in twin pregnancies and can affect placental function – close monitoring is essential.

Previous preterm birth or pregnancy complications

If you have a history of preterm labour or other obstetric issues, extra monitoring can help plan interventions.

Triplets or higher‑order multiples

These pregnancies are at even higher risk and require even more frequent and detailed evaluation.

Simply want the best care for your twins

Even without specific risk factors, all twin pregnancies benefit from specialist evaluation – it gives you and your babies the best chance of a healthy outcome.
