A skull X‑ray is a quick, painless, and non‑invasive imaging test that uses low‑dose radiation to produce detailed images of the bones of the skull, including the cranial vault, facial bones, and paranasal sinuses. It is commonly used to evaluate head trauma, detect fractures, assess sinusitis, and identify skull lesions or calcifications. Skull X‑ray provides vital information about the bony structures of the head. It can detect fractures (linear, depressed, or basilar), sinus opacification, fluid levels in the sinuses, foreign bodies, and bony tumours or cysts. While CT and MRI have largely replaced skull X‑ray for many indications, it remains a useful and cost‑effective screening tool in certain settings – such as trauma triage, follow‑up of known lesions, and evaluation of skull vault abnormalities.

Book

Book your appointment

Call us, WhatsApp, or visit our centre to schedule your skull X‑ray. No special preparation is needed – you can eat and drink normally.

Prepare

Preparation

Remove any metal objects (jewellery, hairpins, glasses, hearing aids, or dentures with metal) from your head and neck area. You will be asked to wear a gown if your clothing has metal parts.

Position

Positioning and imaging

You will be positioned standing, sitting, or lying down depending on the views needed. The technologist will guide you into the correct position and ask you to hold still while the image is taken. The exposure lasts only a fraction of a second. Multiple views may be taken.

Report

Report and interpretation

Your images are reviewed by a radiologist. A comprehensive report with findings and recommendations is typically ready within 24 hours – shared with you and your referring physician.

Known or suspected skull lesions

Post‑surgical evaluation

After craniotomy or sinus surgery – X‑ray checks hardware position, bone healing, and sinus anatomy.

Foreign body detection

If there is a suspected foreign body in the skull or soft tissues – X‑ray can locate metallic or glass fragments.

Paediatric head shape or suture concerns

In infants and children – X‑ray can assess sutures, fontanelles, and detect craniosynostosis or other cranial anomalies.
