The Non-Stress Test (NST) is a simple, non‑invasive, and painless fetal monitoring test that evaluates your baby's heart rate in response to its own movements. A healthy, well‑oxygenated baby will typically have a normal heart rate with periodic accelerations (increases) during movement – this is a "reactive" or reassuring NST. The test is widely used in the third trimester to assess fetal wellbeing, especially in high‑risk pregnancies, and to provide peace of mind for expectant mothers.

Unlike the Contraction Stress Test (CST), the NST does not involve any artificial stimulation of contractions. It relies on the baby's natural movements, making it more comfortable and convenient. The test is performed using a fetal monitor with an ultrasound transducer placed on your abdomen to record the baby's heart rate, and a button for you to press whenever you feel the baby move.

NST monitoring

You lie comfortably on a couch. An ultrasound transducer is placed on your abdomen to monitor the baby's heart rate. You will be asked to press a button whenever you feel the baby move. The test takes 20–40 minutes.

Interpretation and feedback

The NST trace is interpreted immediately by an obstetrician. You receive instant feedback on your baby's reactivity – reassuring if reactive; further evaluation if non‑reactive.

Multiple pregnancy (twins/triplets)

NST is used to monitor each baby in multiple pregnancies, especially if complications are present.

Routine screening in the third trimester
