Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

Viability Scan

Confirm a healthy start – hear your baby's heartbeat, confirm dates, and gain peace of mind in the first trimester.

Overview

The first glimpse of your baby's heartbeat.

A viability scan, also known as an early dating scan, is typically performed between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. It confirms that your pregnancy is progressing well, establishes accurate dates, and gives you the first reassuring sight of your baby's heartbeat.

In the early weeks, many women experience anxiety – wondering if everything is developing normally. A viability scan provides clear answers: it confirms the presence of a gestational sac, the fetal pole, and – most importantly – a heartbeat. It also rules out ectopic pregnancy and checks for multiple embryos. All of this in a gentle, non‑invasive ultrasound, performed by our experienced radiologist.

At Amytri, we understand that early pregnancy is a time of both excitement and worry. Our viability scan is conducted in a calm, supportive environment, with results explained to you immediately and in detail. We take the time to answer your questions and give you the confidence you need for the journey ahead.

What a viability scan covers

  • Confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy (ruling out ectopic pregnancy)
  • Detection of fetal heartbeat (usually visible from 6 weeks)
  • Measurement of crown‑rump length (CRL) for accurate dating
  • Assessment of gestational sac and yolk sac
  • Identification of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets)
  • Evaluation of maternal pelvic structures (uterus, ovaries)
Why it matters

Early reassurance, accurate foundations.

A viability scan is more than a "nice to have" – it is a clinically valuable step that sets the stage for the rest of your pregnancy care.

Certainty

Confirm a viable pregnancy

Seeing a heartbeat and a properly positioned gestational sac gives you confidence that your pregnancy is developing as expected, reducing the anxiety of early miscarriage.

Accuracy

Get precise dates

Measurements of the embryo in the first trimester are the most accurate way to determine your due date – essential for planning later tests and delivery.

Safety

Rule out complications early

Early detection of an ectopic pregnancy or a molar pregnancy can save your life and preserve future fertility. A viability scan ensures you are not missing these critical diagnoses.

What we assess

Every detail of your early pregnancy examined.

Our viability scan is thorough and systematic, ensuring nothing is overlooked.

Gestational sac & yolk sac

We confirm the presence and position of the gestational sac in the uterus, along with the yolk sac – the embryo's early nutrition source.

Fetal heartbeat

We detect and measure the fetal heart rate – a strong, regular heartbeat is the most reassuring sign of a healthy pregnancy.

Crown‑rump length (CRL)

Precise measurement of the embryo from head to bottom gives the most accurate gestational age and due date, often adjusting your estimated delivery.

Multiple pregnancy detection

We look for more than one embryo – twins or higher multiples are identified early, which changes your care plan significantly.

Ectopic pregnancy exclusion

We carefully check the fallopian tubes and ovarian regions to ensure the pregnancy is correctly located inside the uterus – a critical safety step.

Uterine & ovarian assessment

We evaluate the uterus for fibroids, the ovaries for cysts, and any other pelvic findings that could affect the pregnancy.

How it works

Your viability scan journey, step by step.

01
Book

Schedule your scan

Call or WhatsApp us to book a time – you can come directly, or we can coordinate with your gynaecologist.

02
Prepare

Come with a full bladder

For a transabdominal scan, a full bladder helps visualise the uterus clearly. We'll advise you on the best preparation.

03
Scan

Gentle ultrasound

We perform the scan – either on your abdomen or with a small vaginal probe (more detailed in early weeks). Both are painless and safe.

04
Results

Immediate discussion & report

We review the findings with you on the spot, explain what they mean, and provide a written report for your records and your doctor.

Is it for you?

A viability scan is recommended if any of these apply.

Even if you have no symptoms, many women choose a viability scan for peace of mind. But it's especially useful in these circumstances.

First positive pregnancy test

If you've just seen that positive line, a viability scan confirms the pregnancy is real and developing – a wonderful first step.

Uncertain dates or irregular cycles

If you're unsure when you conceived, a viability scan gives you a reliable due date, helping you and your doctor plan ahead.

Previous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy

Early confirmation of a viable intrauterine pregnancy can be deeply reassuring and allows for extra monitoring if needed.

Bleeding or pain in early pregnancy

Any bleeding or cramping warrants a scan to rule out miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy – please don't wait.

Assisted conception (IVF/IUI)

Patients who have undergone fertility treatment often need an early scan to confirm the number of embryos and their position.

Just for peace of mind

Even without any particular risk factors, many couples find that seeing the heartbeat on screen and getting a clear due date reduces anxiety and helps them bond with the pregnancy.
