Kidney function tests (KFTs), also known as renal function tests, are a group of blood and urine tests that evaluate how well your kidneys are working. They measure waste products like creatinine and urea, as well as electrolytes and minerals that are regulated by the kidneys. These tests are essential for detecting kidney disease early, monitoring chronic conditions, and guiding treatment decisions.

The kidneys are vital organs that filter waste from your blood, regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance, and produce hormones that support bone health. Kidney disease is often silent – symptoms may not appear until function is significantly impaired, making regular screening crucial for early detection and prevention of progression to kidney failure.

What the kidney function panel typically includes

  • Serum Creatinine – a waste product from muscle metabolism; high levels indicate impaired kidney function
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) – a waste product from protein breakdown; elevated in kidney disease
  • Uric Acid – a byproduct of purine metabolism; high levels cause gout and may indicate kidney issues
  • Electrolytes – Sodium (Na⁺), Potassium (K⁺), Chloride (Cl⁻), Bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) – vital for nerve, muscle, and fluid balance
  • eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) – calculated from creatinine; a key measure of kidney function
  • BUN/Creatinine Ratio – helps differentiate between prerenal and renal causes of elevated creatinine
  • Urine Routine and Microscopy – to assess protein, blood, and crystals in urine
  • Urine Albumin/Creatinine Ratio (UACR) – for detecting early kidney damage (microalbuminuria)
  • Calcium and Phosphorus – minerals regulated by the kidneys; imbalances affect bone health

Serum Creatinine & eGFR

Creatinine is a waste product filtered by the kidneys. eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) is calculated from creatinine – a value below 60 mL/min/1.73m² indicates kidney dysfunction.

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

Urea is a waste product from protein metabolism. Elevated BUN occurs in kidney disease, dehydration, or high protein intake. The BUN/Creatinine ratio helps differentiate causes.

Uric Acid

High uric acid can cause gout and kidney stones. It may also indicate reduced kidney function or certain metabolic disorders.

Electrolytes (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, HCO₃⁻)

Kidneys regulate electrolyte balance. Abnormal sodium, potassium, chloride, or bicarbonate levels can indicate kidney disease, dehydration, or adrenal disorders.

Urine Routine & Microscopy

Urine analysis detects protein, blood, pus cells, crystals, and casts – providing essential clues to kidney and urinary tract disorders.

Microalbuminuria (UACR)

Urine Albumin/Creatinine Ratio detects early kidney damage (microalbuminuria) – especially important in diabetes and hypertension for preventing progression.

Prepare

Preparation

Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended (water only) for accurate creatinine and electrolyte results. Inform us about any medications (diuretics, ACE inhibitors) you are taking.

Sample collection

Blood and urine collection

A trained phlebotomist collects a venous blood sample. You will also be asked to provide a urine sample (random or 24‑hour collection depending on the test).

Analysis

Laboratory processing

Samples are processed on fully automated analysers using validated methods. Results are reviewed by experienced pathologists before release.

Get your results

Reports are ready within 24 hours and delivered via WhatsApp or email. We provide reference ranges, eGFR values, and flag abnormal results for easy interpretation.

Diabetes

Hypertension damages kidney blood vessels – regular KFTs monitor kidney health and guide blood pressure management.

Swelling (oedema) or changes in urination

Swelling in the legs, face, or hands, or changes in urine frequency/colour may indicate kidney dysfunction – KFTs can confirm.

Family history of kidney disease

If you have a family history of polycystic kidney disease, Alport syndrome, or other inherited kidney conditions, early screening is advised.

Long‑term medication use

NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and certain antibiotics can affect kidney function – regular KFTs ensure safety.

Routine health check‑up

Including KFTs in your annual health screening ensures any silent kidney issues are caught early, especially as you age.
